Consumer Hobbies & Interests – Self Reported Information
As consumers ourselves, all of us “report” our interests and hobbies in a variety of ways. The most direct and obvious way we do so is via survey – be the response mechanism an online survey, a snail mail survey, or a phone survey. How we end up completing these surveys varies as well – perhaps we fill out a warranty card for a product we purchase, answer a few questions on a magazine subscription blow-in, get a random call while we’re feeling charitable, or some of us even seek out online surveys to complete in order to earn a reward of some sort (there are dozens of ways we end up completing surveys, but you get the idea). In addition to surveys, we buy stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. Some of the companies that sell us things also sell their customer lists. Have a customer loyalty card with Organic Only Groceries? You may be coded as having an interest in “Foods – Natural”. Have a subscription to Golf Magazine? You may have just reported that you are interested in golfing. We also sign up for newsletters, inquire about products, attend events & seminars … all the while indicating our personal preferences.
Our National Consumer Masterfile is unique in this arena in one very important way: every element flagged to a consumer or household must be corroborated. If you just subscribe to Golf magazine, that’s not enough to get you flagged as a golfer. Maybe you bought that magazine for a family member and just had it come in your name. You will have to do something else golf related to get flagged as interested golf on this file.

Green Living – households that are living environmentally friendly. They use environmentally healthy products and services such as, eco-friendly soaps, detergents, and household cleaning products. These households eat organic foods, and potentially grow the food themselves. They may also be socially active by donating funds to environmental causes. Some of them drive vehicles that are considered ‘green’ or hybrids.
